Alpha Lipoic Acid - an important
antioxidant that has been shown to boost the power of other antioxidants such as
glutathione and vitamin E. Results from numerous studies point
to the efficacy of alpha-lipoic acid in the treatment of diabetes. Additional studies suggest alpha-lipoic acid may
have benefits for stroke victims, protect against cardiac ischemia/reperfusion
injury, prevent cataracts, help prevent c, and improve memory, positive
effects in patients with stages I and II open-angle glaucoma. It has also exhibited
anti-HIV activity both in vitro and in visto.

Bifidus (bifidobacterium bifidum) -
Abundant in the large intestine, may also be found in lower levels in the
smaller intestine and vagina. Proper digestion and absorption of nutrients plays
a critical role in the aging process. These bacteria are believed to decline with age,
and thus supplemental use of bifidus may be directly involved with aging. Peer review studies support the use of bifidus in the
treatment of bowel and gastric disorders, including ulcer and diarrhea, which
can often disrupt digestion and lead to larger health problems.
Bifidus may be effective in preventing the risk
of c and also helps to strengthen the immune system. Studies have shown stability of
the human fecal flora, a marker for colon c risk and that bifidobacterium
bifidus proved to be useful in the treatment of women suffering from epithelial c. Animal experiments have demonstrated bifidus can inhibit the development
of liver, colon, and mammary tumors. Bifidus has also exhibited anti-c
activity in vitro. With respect to immune enhancement, the regular intake of
Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus has been proven to
modulate immunological and inflammatory responses in human subjects. Similar
findings have been obtained in studies involving mice.

Calcium - The role of calcium in both the
prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is well documented in the scientific
literature. Studies have examined
the effects of calcium in combination with vitamin D on the effects of
corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis showed
treatment could help prevent early bone loss in the spine of such subjects. Results showed that
nightly calcium supplementation led to bone loss
cessation over a period of two years. Such effects were increased when combined
with exercise. Calcium supplementation can improve the bone mass of
postmenopausal women using estrogen replacement therapy and with a low intake of
dietary intake calcium.
Additionally, high calcium intake may be effective in the
treatment of such unrelated diseases as arterial hypertension, nephrolithiasis,
colon c, etc.

Chromium - an important micronutrient
that has been reported capable of dramatically increasing the life span of
rodents. In humans, chromium is most noted for its beneficial effects in
patients suffering from diabetes.
Studies concluded that chromium given to healthy subjects significantly reduced
ninety-minute glucose concentrations and fasting glucose concentrations. Significant improvements in insulin
binding to red blood cells and insulin receptor number were seen as well. Supplemental chromium picolinate administered for
two months produced a significant reduction in serum triglycerides in patients
suffering from noninsulin dependent diabetes. Chromium has exhibited similar
antidiabetic activity in studies involving rats.
Heart disease is another area where chromium has
shown positive effects. Results show that atherosclerosis patients experienced lower serum triglycerides. Supplementation has
also produced beneficial increases in HDL cholesterol levels among men on
beta-blockers. Treatment of Turner's syndrome patients
produced a reduction in cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels and an increase
in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol as well.

Coenzyme Q10 - an important part of the
metabolic process. It is involved in the energy process and can be synthesized in
the body. Studies show that CoQ10 holds major promise in the treatment of a wide
variety of degenerative diseases, including AIDS, diabetes, stroke, c, and
especially heart disease.
Studies have shown patients pretreated with CoQ10
showed the following:
- lower incidence of ventricular arrhythmias during the recovery
period.
- less
left arterial pressure
- decreased incidence of low cardiac output
- wider
pulse pressure
- better preserved right and left ventricular myocardial
ultrastructure relative to controls.
- improved impaired central and
peripheral nerve conductivities
- administered
intravenously was effective in the prevention of left ventricular
depression in early reperfusion
- minimalizes myocardial cellular injury
during coronary artery bypass grafting followed by reperfusion.
- effective against cardiac dysfunction in patients with
mitral valve prolapse and improved stress-induced cardiac dysfunction
- along with other antioxidants and fatty acids,
breast c patients noted partial tumor regression
- vented adriamycin and
dauborubicin-induced side effects in malignant lymphoma patients, including
alopecia, fever, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and stomatitis
- can boost immune response when administered alone or in combination with
vitamin B6 and has led to an
improvement in abnormal metabolism of pyruvate and NADH oxidation in the
skeletal muscle of Kearns-Sayre Syndrome patients
- chronic lung disease patients experienced
positive results
Patients suffering from symptoms commonly
preceding congestive heart failure showed the following improvements
- high blood pressure reduction in 80%
- improved diastolic function in all
- reduction in myocardial thickness in 53% of hypertensives and 36% of the combined prolapse and fatigue
syndrome groups
- reduction in fractional shortening in those high at control
and an increase in those initially low.
Chronic congestive heart failure patients significantly
decreased hospitalization rates for heart failure worsening and complication
incidence as well as, improvements in dyspnea at rest, exertional dyspnea, blood
viscosity, palpitation, cyanosis, hepatomegaly, pulmonary rates, ankle edema,
heart rate, and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with
chronic heart failure.

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) - a
steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands that has been linked directly to
the aging process, as well as numerous conditions associated with it. The amount
of DHEA in the body steadily declines over time, which has prompted many
researchers to suggest that DHEA levels should be considered a biomarker for
aging.
Results of numerous studies have shown the
following:
- beneficial effects
for muscle strength, immune
function, and overall quality of life for elderly patients
- can be effective against amnesia associated with dementia, and in
maintaining the function of neuronal cells that may reduce progress toward
Alzheimer's
-
significantly increases REM sleep
- benefits age-related
dementia and middle-aged and elderly patients
suffering from symptoms of depression and impaired memory performance
- has exhibited antic activity in rats and
mice
- high doses have shown modest reductions on viral load in patients infected with
HIV
- therapeutic effects on diabetic mice by producing a rapid remission of
hyperglycemia, a preservation of beta-cell structure and function, and an
increased insulin sensitivity as measured by glucose tolerance tests
- countered defects in influenza immunity associated with
aging in older mice
- has exhibited anti-obesity effects in
mice
- topical use has proven effective in
restoring immune function in burned mice
- significantly reduces the risk
of atherosclerosis in rabbits
- low levels have been associated with the
risk of acute heart attacks, coronary heart disease, and myocardial infarction
- eases symptoms associated with menopause and
lupus
-
enhances the efficacy of vaccination against influenza in the elderly as well
Common DHEA doses range from 50 to 2500 mg per
day. Contraindications include prostate c and benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Glutathione is made up of glutamic acid,
glycine, and cysteine - all three amino acids. Significant positive associations
have been shown between blood glutathione levels and host of
biomedical/physiological traits among the elderly, including fewer illnesses,
higher levels of self-rated health, lower cholesterol, lower body mass index,
and lower blood pressures.
Those suffering from arthritis, diabetes, or
heart disease showed significantly lower glutathione levels than those without
disease. Studies examining blood glutathione levels have
concluded that physical health and longevity are closely related.
Results of numerous studies have shown the
following:
- direct anti-aging and
chemopreventive effects
- useful in the treatment
of liver damage
- significant improvements of the enzyme
patterns in the livers of chronic alcoholics, and has significantly improved the
rate of various hepatic tests in patients with chronic steatosic liver disease
- significantly improved sperm motility
patterns in men suffering from infertility
- inhibits the replication of HIV-2 and Herpes-1 in
vitro
- reduces and/or
diminishes the severity of sugar
cataractogenesis
